Now, for those of us who are familiar with the effects of sugar on teeth, it may not be completely surprising that kids—let’s face it, the connoisseurs of all things sweet—may be particularly susceptible to developing a cavity. The root cause of dental decay is the bacteria that are harbored inside of plaque, a sticky film that accumulates on teeth. These bacteria thrive on the sugary foods and beverages and produce harmful acids that can erode the enamel your child’s teeth. If plaque isn’t routinely removed from the mouth, the effects of the bacteria multiply, and dental decay—cavities—is the eventual result. Getting treatment for cavities typically involves the cleaning of the decayed area, and restoration of the tooth’s surface, typically with a kids cavity filling 07960. This restoration helps to prevent further decay, and returns the normal form and function to the tooth.

If your child is suffering from a cavity, make sure to get a kids cavity filling 07960 from the pediatric specialists at Children’s Dentistry of Morristown. Delaying treatment of a cavity can result in deeper decay, and even more serious consequences that can irreversibly compromise their tooth and even affect your child’s overall health. By emphasizing an act-early approach to dentistry, your pediatric dentist can help to maintain the health of your child’s smile.

January is National Soup Month

sweet-pot

There’s nothing better than a nice bowl of soup on a cold winter’s day. Luckily, soup not only tastes good-it can also be a very healthy and tooth-friendly meal. Many common ingredients used in soup such as vegetables, leafy greens, nuts, and seeds all carry benefits for your teeth.

Here is a recipe that we love:

•             Chili Powder – 1/4 tsp

•             Ground Cumin – 2 tsp

Morristown Children’s Dentist

Children’s Dentist in Morristown

Did you know that dental tooth decay is the single most chronic childhood disease? Affecting 25% of US children between the ages of 2 and 5, and 50% of children between 5 and 9, it can lead to painful cavities as well as tooth loss or infection if left untreated. At Children’s Dentistry of Morristown, our highly skilled and compassionate staff welcome children of all ages and provide the quality preventive dental care that they need. Always keep in mind, that establishing an excellent oral hygiene regimen at home, in conjunction with routine dental care as offered by your friendly Morristown children’s dentist, are the best steps that you can take in the prevention of dental disease.

Scheduling regular checkups and cleanings for your child plays a critical role in maintaining their oral health. The buildup of plaque—that sticky substance, that covers your teeth after you eat—is the chief source of tooth decay. Mostly consisting of destructive bacteria which thrives on sugar, the bacteria in plaque release acids which can erode the enamel of your teeth. Eventually, that erosion can cause cavities. Apart from teaching your child the ins and outs of at-home dental care to prevent tooth decay, your Morristown children’s dentist will instruct your child as to which foods are healthy for their smile, along with informing them of the ones that can do the most harm. As added protection for the biting surfaces of your child’s new permanent back teeth, we’ll encourage the placement of dental sealants. Simply brushed on and then cured to set in a few quick and painless steps, dental sealants fill a tooth’s grooves and crevices to form a thin hard shield that protects against decay causing bacteria. Sealants are an excellent preventive measure, since children are notorious for not thoroughly brushing their teeth, and the nooks and crannies are particularly vulnerable areas where cavities tend to develop.

The American Dental Association recommends that when your child’s permanent molars come in—usually around the ages of 6 and 12—the best preventive care, in addition to regular checkups, is the application of dental sealants on the back molars. Of course, preventing cavities is something that we can all smile about!  Schedule an appointment with your Morristown children’s dentist, at Children’s Dentistry of Morristown today.
